The same wrench in three torque tiers, and what the tier is for

The Bluebow 1/2 inch impact wrench comes in three tiers that look alike and differ in the motor: 737.5, 900 and 960 ft-lbs of breakaway torque. Each is a brushless tool with three speed settings, up to 2,300 rpm on the 900 ft-lbs tier and 2,400 rpm on the 960, two 21 V 4.0 Ah batteries, a charger, an LED that stays on for twenty seconds after the trigger, four impact sockets of 17, 19, 21 and 22 mm and an extension bar in the case. The figure on the box is the maximum the tool can deliver loosening a seized fastener, not a setting.

That is the one thing to hold onto when you pick a tier. A lug nut on a passenger car is tightened to roughly 80 to 140 ft-lbs depending on the vehicle, and even a rusted hub bolt rarely needs more than a few hundred to break loose. Any of the three tiers breaks loose the fasteners on a car or a half-ton truck; the higher tiers are for tractor rims, trailer hubs and bolts that have had years to seize. The final tightening still belongs to a torque wrench set to the figure in your vehicle manual, the way the tire trade teaches it.

An impact wrench is a vibrating tool. NIOSH's advice for such tools is plain: let the tool do the work, grip it as lightly as safe control allows, rest it on the work where you can, keep your hands warm, and take a ten-minute break after each hour of continuous use.

Which tier for which fastener
TierBreaks looseWhere it earns its keep

900 ft-lbsHub bolts, rusted frame bolts, trailer wheelsTrucks, trailers, farm equipment
960 ft-lbsSeized fasteners on tractors and implementsShops and farms with old iron

Torque figures are the maximums each tier states for itself. Every tier tightens with far more than a lug nut should get: finish with a torque wrench.

Questions

About Bluebow cordless impact wrenches

Is a Bluebow impact wrench strong enough for your lug nuts?

Every tier is. Lug nuts on cars and half-ton pickups are tightened to roughly 83 to 150 ft-lbs, and the lowest Bluebow tier breaks loose at 737.5 ft-lbs. The torque guide has the chart by vehicle.

Can you tighten lug nuts with the Bluebow impact wrench?

Snug them with it in a star pattern, then finish with a torque wrench at the figure in your manual. An impact wrench does not set torque; that is the last of the four steps the tire trade teaches, and the torque guide spells them out.

What will you find in the Bluebow impact wrench case?

The wrench, two 21 V 4.0 Ah batteries, a charger, four impact sockets in 17, 19, 21 and 22 mm and an extension bar. The sockets cover most passenger car and light truck lug nuts.

Which Bluebow tier should you pick for a trailer or a tractor?

The 900 or the 960 ft-lbs tier. Trailer hub nuts on heavy axles are tightened to several hundred ft-lbs and seize over a winter; the higher tiers break them loose without a breaker bar.
